Turn off the water to the toilet
If the cistern is overfilling or the toilet is leaking, close its own valve. You do not need to shut off the whole house.
Look for a small slotted valve on the pipe behind or beside the toilet.
Turn the slot a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver, so the slot sits across the pipe.
If there is no valve, lift the float arm inside the cistern to stop it filling, or turn off the main stop tap.
Do not keep flushing to see if it clears.

Do you unblock toilets as well as repair them?
Yes. We clear blocked toilets and repair leaks, flush faults and running cisterns.
Is a leaking toilet an emergency?
If water is spreading across the floor, yes. Close the toilet's isolation valve and call us. A slow drip at the base is less urgent, but it can damage the floor, so do not leave it for long.
Can you fix a running toilet?
Yes. It is usually a worn fill valve or flush valve inside the cistern, and it is a straightforward repair.
Blocked toilet in a rented home: landlord or tenant?
It depends on the cause and your tenancy agreement. Blockages from misuse are often the tenant's responsibility, while faulty fittings are normally the landlord's. Check your agreement, and call us either way. We explain the price first.
